Success With Potty Training While Traveling - Taking on Potty Training While Vacationing

article loaded: Sun, 05 Sep 2010 02:50:59 -0400

For parents, frustration is the biggest obstacle with potty training. When your child is ready, your child will achieve the goal of mastering his or her potty training. So it's best to lighten up and go with the flow, so to speak. I flew to Washington State with the kids last summer and my youngest was still potty training. I decided to bring a few potty training seats to try them out and see which one worked best. The results were quite interesting, and even though she has special needs, we were able to make some solid progress with her potty training while we were having a great time on vacation.

One of the potty seats I purchased for the trip was a fold-up travel toilet seat. Although the concept is great, and the seat folds up small enough to fit into my purse, it is flimsy and the fear of it snapping in half while she is doing her thing made me avoid using it after a couple of tries. The last thing I want is for her to have a negative experience so I set this potty seat aside, and tried out a couple others with much more success.

During our 4 hour flight, I was hoping she would not need to use the toilet on the airplane since that might be a little to traumatic for her with all the noise and the way airplane toilets work. We were fortunate to be able to avoid that experience on both the flight there and back.

Before our departure, I had ordered a Canadian product child potty called "Tinkle Toonz" and had it shipped to my destination in Washington. The little toilet actually comes with a moisture-activated sensor in the bottom of the bowl plays "It's A Small World After All". For some reason, my daughter could not get enough of this music and wanted to go potty all the time. It was truly amazing and for the duration of our 14 day trip, she was potty training like a pro on her little Tinkle Toonz potty.

This musical potty was great, but a bit too big to fit in my diaper bag for our site seeing trips, so when we were off to see the sites of beautiful Washington, I needed a potty seat that I could bring along. I ended up packing my daughters Elmo Potty seat that we use all the time at home. It's sturdy, comfortable and small enough to fit in my Baby Sherpa diaper backpack, not to mention very familiar for her. This potty seat worked great on our trip!
The combination of the Tinkle Toonz at the hotel, and using her regular Elmo potty seat while site seeing was the recipe for success with my daughters potty training.

Some other ideas that are very useful to use while potty training on vacation include:

• Potty training doll travel companion.
• Stickers for rewards - have the stickers related to your vacation.
• Provide extra liquids such as water/juice and monitor closely.
• Try to work your site seeing around your child's potty training schedule.
• Carry your potty seat with you while site seeing.
• Keep up with your daily potty training routine while on vacation (sitting on potty at certain times of the day).
• Use a musical potty such as the Tinkle Toonz at the hotel.
• Provide a lot of clapping, praising, and party like atmosphere with successes.
• Bring Potty books, and potty coloring books.
• Use your watch, or timer and a chart to monitor potty activity.
• Offer more praise, clapping excitement and encouragement with each success.
• Avoid the big kid panties until you are much closer to successes, or use only for a few safe hours of the day.
• Finally, have a LOT of patience and rest assured that your child will eventually achieve success with his or her potty training.
